Local alignment: An optimal alignment that includes the most similar local region or regions.

Local area network (LAN): A network that connects computers in a small, defined area, such as the offices in a single wing or a group of buildings.

Local similarity: An alignment technique where we ask for those subunits of two sequences that exhibit most similarity. In biology, this is normally termed local alignment.
