The
Department was established in 1998. It is well equipped with
modern laboratory
facilities for isolation, purification, identification and maintenance
of microbes. Major equipments in the department are Fermenter,
ELISA Reader, Spectrophotometer, PCR, HPLC; all necessary equipments
for immunological studies; high quality microscopes including
flourescent one. It has well-established Microbial Culture Collection
Centre and provides material to several colleges including the
Medical College. The Department has 38 computers, all network
with 24 hours internet facility. The Department has its own
Departmental Library with approximately 3500 books, 14 national
and international journals. The Department regularly organizes
workshops, with the University of Heidelburg (Germany) which
has enabled the department to create the infrastructure for
medical microbiological test and inventions. The department
provides specialization in Medical, Industrial, Agricultural
and Environmental Microbiology.
The Department is having active academic collobration with several
national laboratories in India like CIMAP, Lucknow; CDRI, Lucknow;CDFD,
Hyderabad; IVRI, Bareilley; CMVL, Meerut; Central Jalma Institute
of Leprosy, Agra and AIIMS, New Delhi etc. where the students
have an oppurtunity to complete their project work in the collaboration
of the Department. Only the selected students of M.Sc. (Applied
Microbiology) also have an opportunity for 2-3 month project
training in the Universities/Research Institutes in Germany
Under / AESTE programme, sponsored by German Academic Exchange
Service, Bonn (Germany). All students of M.Sc. (Applied Microbiology)
are also provided an opportunity to work in highly reputed institutions
/ industries during summer / winter vacations. Bioinformatics
is relatively a new challenging field for biologist with an
aim to use the Computer Science and Information Technology in
biomedical based researches and industries. With this view point,
the Department has started 2 year course of M.Sc. (Bioinformatics)
where students will be trained for the use of computers and
information technology in the field of biology.
